AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS
American Association of School Librarians lays out the mission, vision and standards for School Library Media Specialists in "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs" (AASL, 2009), Standards for the 21st-Century Learner in Action" (AASL, 2009), and Information Power (ALA, 1999):
- The school library media specialist "empowers students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information"
- The school library media specialist can use the information literacy standards for student learning to create and maintain a program for a broad learning community: students, teachers, administrators, parents, and the neighborhood - that will support lifelong learning.
- The school library media specialist strives to instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information.
